The Ultimate Guide to Amsterdam: Where to Geaux Eat, Stay, and Play
If you’re looking for a city that’s both walkable and wildly inspiring, Amsterdam is it. I recently spent a few days soaking up its art, culture, canals, and a few incredible meals—and it did not disappoint.
Whether you’re here for museums or just want to float along the historic waterways with a drink in hand, this itinerary has a little bit of everything: world-class art, local beer, and one of the best seafood meals I’ve ever had.
Geaux Do!
No visit to Amsterdam is complete without floating through its iconic canals. I booked a 1-hour open boat cruise that departed near the Rijksmuseum. It was relaxing, scenic, and the best way to get a feel for the layout of the city. some cruises include wine and cocktails which I highly recommend.
As someone who always loved Van Gogh’s work, this was a highlight. The museum is thoughtfully curated and emotional—seeing The Bedroom and Sunflowers in person was surreal.
Tip: Reserve tickets in advance—they sell out fast.
This is Amsterdam’s top art museum and home to masterpieces like Rembrandt’s The Night Watch and Vermeer’s The Milkmaid. Even the building itself is a work of art. Buy tickets in advance as they sell out.
This is not just a museum—it’s an emotional and deeply moving experience. You walk through the hidden annex where Anne Frank and her family hid during WWII and learn her story in the place it actually happened.
Even if you’re not a big beer drinker, the Heineken Brewery Tour was fun, interactive, and surprisingly techy. From history to virtual pour-your-own-pint moments, it was a cool blend of education and entertainment
This popular tour offers a curated walk through the Jordaan, filled with history and traditional Dutch tastings. One of my favorite experiences in Amsterdam was joining a local food tour through the Jordaan neighborhood. With a guide leading the way, taste fresh stroopwafels, rich Dutch cheeses, Poffertjes (mini pancakes) and the famous bitterballen—all while wandering some of the most charming streets in the city.
Geaux Stay!

Geaux Eat!
Amsterdam surprised me—in the best way—with its food scene. From canal-side cafés to creative seafood spots like Pesca and classic Dutch bites like bitterballen, here’s where I found great meals in the city.
De Kas is one of Amsterdam’s most iconic farm-to-table restaurants, located inside a beautiful greenhouse in Frankendael Park. They grow many of their own herbs and vegetables on-site, and the set tasting menu changes daily based on what’s harvested. Book well in advance.
This was easily the most unique seafood experience I’ve ever had. You walk into what feels like a seafood market, pick your fish, sides, and wine like you’re grocery shopping, and the chefs prepare everything to perfection.
This cozy café was steps from the Heineken Brewery and served up one of the best hamburgers I’ve had abroad. Juicy, flavorful, and served with golden fries and local flair. It’s also a great lunch or casual dinner spot.
For Italian food lovers—this place is a gem. Fresh pasta, rich sauces, and a warm, elegant atmosphere. The service was top-notch, and the wine list? Bellissimo.

Amsterdam is mostly cashless. Many cafés, museums, and stores prefer debit/credit cards, and some don’t even accept cash.
Popular spots like the Van Gogh Museum, Anne Frank House, and Rijksmuseum often sell out.
Buy a GVB multi-day pass at the airport, tram stops, or online. It covers unlimited trams, buses, and metros in Amsterdam.
